Mass Meeting 29 Octobre
La Government Teachers’ Union a réuni ses adhérents ce samedi 29 octobre au Teachers’ Centre à Quatre-Bornes. Ce syndicat d’instituteurs, se sentant menacé par l’Enhancement programme du ministère de l’Education, est déterminé à se battre pour la liberté de donner des cours particuliers.
Pour Vinod Seegum, président de la Government Teachers’ Union, « le ministre de l’Education ne peut empêcher les parents à faire leur choix en ce qui concerne l’éducation de leurs enfants ».
Lors de la rencontre de ce samedi matin, le syndicaliste est revenu sur l’Enhancement Programme du ministère, pour dire qu’il n’est pas question que les instituteurs acceptent qu’une journée scolaire se termine à 17 heures.
Selon Vinod Seegum, avec le projet du ministre Vasant Bunwaree les institutions primaires du pays deviendront des « garderies institutionnelles ». Selon lui, pour faire accepter l’Enhancement Programme, les autorités procèdent à du « Teacher Bashing », un procédé que la GTU compte combattre. Cela d’autant plus que « les leçons particulières sont installées dans les habitudes des Mauriciens et que les instituteurs n’en sont aucunement responsables ».
Rappelons que le ministre de l’Education a réagi hier, vendredi 28 octobre, contre les critiques à propos du Enhancement Program, répondant notamment aux critiques qu’ont formulées tant le député de l’opposition Steve Obeegadoo que le syndicaliste Vinod Seegum.
Steve Obeegadoo avait dit, lors de la séance parlementaire du mardi 25 octobre, qu’avec ce programme extracurriculaire de soutien aux élèves de Standard IV, le ministre de l’Education avait « eu recours à un procédé anti-démocratique ».
Pour le ministre de l’Education les critiques de Steve Obeegadoo relèvent « de la démagogie ». Avant de lancer : « Le débat était déjà là. Que l’on ne vienne pas gêner le gouvernement pour un projet qui a été applaudi par tous. »
Concernant l’interdiction des leçons particulières en Standard IV, Vasant Bunwaree affirme qu’il commence par cette classe et que le cycle primaire sera lui-même revu afin de le diviser en trois étapes. Le Standard I et II regroupés en une étape, le Standard III et IV en une seconde tranche et la classe de Standard V et le CPE composant l’étape finale.

Si j’ai redemandé mon admission à la GTU (je ne forme parti d’aucun syndicat et je ne sais pas si la direction va accepté), c’est parce que je ne peux pas laisser le ‘teacher bashing’continuer. On nous fait passer pour des vampires par certains journalistes,certains peudos-syndicalistes,grand ex-donneurs de leçons et certains membres du public!Moi j’ai 57 ans et il ne me reste plus que quelques années pour me retirer!Il serait lâche de ma part de rester tranqyuille.J’ai envie de participer aux manifestations organisées par la GTU quand on nous fait passer pour des buveurs de sang.Je regrette d’avoir à écrire ce qui suit:Des centaines d’éducateurs offrent gratuitement des crayons;aiguisoirs,gommes,cahiers;livres de leçons et autres matériels scolaires GRATUITEMENT aux élèves.Sans compter de la nourriture à ceux qui n’ont rien à manger.Je ne dirai pas qu’il n’y a pas de brebis galeuses,ils sont une poignée.Mais la majorié des donneurs des leçons cassent les prix ou donnent carrément gratuitement les leçons.Les leçons au CPE coûtent environ Rs 400,la Std V Rs 350 et la Std 4 Rs 300.Si nous divisons par 5 sujets,CPE Rs 80 par sujet,Std 5 Rs 70 par sujet et Std 4 Rs 60 par sujet.Et on ose dire qu’on fait de l’or!Des généralistes prennent Rs 500,des spécialistes plus de mille roupies,sans compter ceux qui pratiquent des prix exorbitants pour les travaux manuels.Les leçons à partir de la forme 1 coûte environ Rs 300 par sujet.Si mo bizin écrire,trop boucoup.Soyons solidaire de la GTU pour l’avenir de tous ces jeunes qui travaillent pou di pain di ber,alors que dans d’autres secteurs,des jeunes gagnent plus d’argent que moi qui ai 33 ans de service.
Sad to notice that the opposition at the gtu is supporting the minister in threatening teachers. Mr Junglee has been on newspapers congratulating Bunwaree along with the silence of Lollbeeharry and Kassinathdoos.

I agree with Mr Clency’s remarks> we will not allow us (teachers) to be dictated by others who know nothing about the functioning of the school and above our contribution, as teachers, to the overall development of the child. we are not just golddiggers. As mentioned by Mr Clency, there are other professional sectors who are working for exorbiting prices( doctors….).. Why just pinpointing teachers? This time we must be united and we will contribute to fighting against the decision of the minister.
I would like to convey my sincere appreciation to Mr Seegum for having been such a competent representative of teachers on RadioPlus on 2 occasions.
He has shown to the the Minister and the population at large, that we are not mere puppets in the hands of the Government, and that we too have our say in the Education sector.
We should continue to fight for our rights in this way especially the fact that the normal working hours might become 9 to 5 p.m shortly. If we just sit and watch, then this is what is going to happen.
Unfortunately, it is teachers themselves who are responsible for that situation as many of them should not have accepted Enhancement Programme in the first place.
Now, we should all bear the consequences of the wrong decision taken by such teachers. If we had stood together hand in hand, EP would not have existed.
Therefore, now we should live with the threat that in a few years, school will dismiss at 5 or 5.15 p.m everyday! Shame on these teachers who accepted to do EP and did not have the courage to refuse…
Anyway, long live Seegum and the GTU.

Good stand of GTU against the Education A. bill and resolutions voted at mass meeting on the 29th October at Teacher’s centre, Q.B. For me the EP is just a means for the Ministry to extend working hours in primary schools to 5pm. Just wait for the next PRB, our new salary will be annexed to extension in the working time..Just watch out! Then, of course we will all sign the option forms because of the money and schools will end up at 5 pm..Don’t forget what the last PRB did with 30 min. integration in our work for Numeracy n Literacy..What a blunder! This is done in the advantage of parents and schools will be used as ‘garderie’ as rightly stated out by the GTU president, Mr Seegum. Where is the rationality in such a decision?..it is supposed to offer pupils the chance to indulge in other activities that can develop his potentialities other than academic stuff. But is the EP going in this direction..to my opinion NO! Just take the case of resource people who are supposed to teach arts like music, plays, drawing etc…it is just catastrophic..let’s take music for instance..it’s just alarming..there are a number of those so called ‘music teachers’ who do not even know Sa Re Ga Ma, the a,b,c of music..those ‘teachers’ are teaching music..what a shame! Its so easy to verify what I’m saying..just enquire how many of them have a diploma or even a certificate from a recognised institution..the findings will just be stunning! I know what I’m saying.
For me, the GTU must undertake a vigorous campaign against the EP, teachers must be made aware of the danger awaiting them infront..we should not give in for peanuts..we have a dignity..the ministry cannot take us for a ride..Those teachers doing EP should be put to task and they’ll have to answer for posterity..
For me, the ideal solution is the formation of resourceful persons to carry out such activities to build up the character of the child but again this should be done within school hours with a fair balance between academic stuff and extracurricular activities with less pressure on the CPE exams..of course this will take time and we can’t do otherwise unfortunately.
If there is goodwill from the Ministry and all the stakeholders concerned, schools can be a better place for the dissemination of education..but the solution is certainly not the extension of school hours to 5pm which is those concerned apparently..

Hi teachers at petit verger gs are not being allowed to keep their cars in the school yard.can you tell us how this matter can be settled?is there a circular letter to support this request?do we actually have to abide to it?
