GTU reckons around 5000 registered members and only 1800 turned up for voting. The main question remains why so much absenteeism – less than 40 %.
Is it that the opponents did not make enough efforts in their campaign and could not mobilize teachers for such an important exercise as to choose their representatives to defend their case or is it that the bulk of teachers are satisfied with the performance of the GTU Managing Committee?
Whatever be the answer, we have a new management team for two years now. Let’s just wish them best of luck and hope that they deliver the goods, as a herculean task to upgrade the status of teachers in the wake of the PRB report, is awaiting them at the corner.

now let’s take a serious issue into consideration.are we not all mauritian?does creole language does not belong to is all the speakers of that language in mauritius?does the mauritian creole unifies all the mauritian despite their colour, religion or creed?
i feel that introducing creol at during during the AL period .the language belongs to the Hindus,chineese,Muslim etc.it is the symbol of unity.so,by teaching creole during the Al period only some pupils will have the priviledge to learn our cherished mother tongue.what about others?where is gone???It’s apity that instead of being a unifying factor it has become a dividing factor.

It’s a team effort and team success, and henceforth team spirit must prevail throughout.
Well! Congratulations! But I think that it’s time now to consider the situation which is prevailing in our primary sector. The Minister with much noise and pomp has announced that “Creole” will be introduced as a subject in primary schools. Why isn’t anybody going against this decision? Why do each time only the primary sector has to accept the decisions of Ministers. Why don’t they introduce “creole” as a subject in the secondary sector too! I personally would have appreciated to introduce “Creole” as a teaching mode throughout our various subjects but not as a subject on its own! It’s just a very FOOLISH idea and others who are applauding this decision are no better. I don’t know why people don’t see that it is just a political tactic. The Ministry has refused once that ICT should be discontinued as a subject and will therefore be integrated in the curriculum. ICT is far better a subject than “Creole”. Why don’t they propose integrating “creole” in the curriculum? Why such a waste of resources? How many of us will let our children learn “creole” at school? We are Mauritians and “creole” is our mother –tongue. We don’t need big academies to study it! I think that the union should think better before accepting any proposals. Don’t be blinded by a few rupees added to our salary.

Hi, I would like to congratulate all those who are working to introduce the Creole as an optional subject…since long it was said during training that children wont familiar working with all the teachers that they see…now, we can see that it is no more the same argument…slowly but surely there will be subject teaching. Same as in private primary schools. (Reduction in the load of work).
Hope that primary schools don’t end at 17h00 in the future.
I thank brother Bashir for his comments on the rate of absenteim for the last GTU ELECTION.We must bear in mind that only 10 to 12 % of workers are unionised in Mauritius out of 600,000 workers,GTU MUST BE PROUD IF 45 % of members turned up ,i.e 1901 members voted.This is a good sign but we must encourage members to come and vote.Do you know that the AGM of the Nursing ass/union with 3500 members has been postponed last week because there was no QUORUM.Secondly GTU is a rare union where we have one man one vote.Large associations like GSEA with more than 10,000 workers but for elections only 40 or 45 Delegate vote.This
is the real trade unionism in this country.Many of our trade unionist are here for life.Gtu is an example of DEMOCRACY IN MAURITIUS.History has proved that GTU members are always active and there has never been any postponement for an assembly in the life of GTU.But we must not remain idle.We ancient members must inform young teachers that GTU gives the protection of one of the largest industrial and professional teachers union in the Indian ocean.The GTU gives teachers a voice in the workplace and the community.We do this by assisting them to gain better pay,improved living standards,safe working environment and employment security,through collective bargaining and strength in the workplace.Thanks.

hi, We have gathered information on the role of facilitators and we are pleased to forward to you his duties. The fact is that the ministry sent these people to collaborate with teachers in charge of the class so as to help children who are below the average pass marks and with a little help these kids can succeed in the final exams. He is supposed to cater for these kids but he has to perform his duties together with you in the classroom. Nevertheless you are the only boss and you have no orders to receive from him. If ever you feel that his presence is undesirable in your class then all you have to do is to report the case to us or the ministry as high officials at the ministry have agreed with us that they will take necessary steps to remove him/her from the class

I would like to apply for study leave bcoz I have exams in june.This is my second year of study and I have 14 years of service.It’s the first time I’m applying for study leave.Can someone plz advise me about the no. of days I am entitled to?thanks in advance.

Hi Naz.
Study leave is a recommendation in PRB report so that officers of any ministry have the opportunity to upgrade their qualifications but another clause back kick the previous one and it refers to exigencies of the service. Nevertheless you apply for your study leave and if its the last year of studies you will surely be granted the 21 days leave else you will be granted only leaves on specific exams days. Exigencies of the service come into force
In primary schools there are Inspectors and Supervisors to supervise the jobs done by the teachers in each subject matter.Yet ICT is being taught without being supervised. Many teachers have graduated in IT with certain expectations but still nothing has been done for them.Hope the PRB looks into the matter and showers some light on their path.
