Teachers Day Celebrations (Teachers’ News Sep 09)
Following the closure of schools due to AHINI flu, GTU stated that teachers as professionals are well able to catch up with the work. Unlike some nincompoops who averred that recess time should be shortened by 15 minutes, it would have been futile to explain to these dimwits that teachers should obtain their 30 minutes undisturbed lunch time. Still others declared that classes be held on Saturday mornings. GTU was .. adamant against all these ridiculous suggestions and proposed that teachers choose to start work at 8.30 a.m instead of 8.50 a.m. Despite GTU’s proposal being optional, the union is sure that a majority of upper class teachers already start work early. Thus, GTU did not press for a school holiday on 5th October 2009, to allow teachers to catch up with their work and will therefore celebrate Teachers Day on Saturday 3rd October 2009 at L. E. Fabien Teachers Centre, Quatre Bornes.
The minister of Education has been invited to launch an Integrity Charter for Teachers prepared by ICAC and GTU.
Integrity Charter for Teachers
Members will recall that GTU has been since last year working with the Ministry of Education and the ICAC about establishing an Integrity Charter for Teachers. Same idea evolved from a forum held jointly by the Ministry of Education, the ICAC and GTU on 4 December 2008 at MIE, Réduit with the participation of some 500 teachers. The Minister of Education has been called upon to launch the Integrity Charter on Teachers Day which will be celebrated on Saturday 3rd October 2009 at L. E. Fabien Teachers Centre. The Charter will be displayed in all schools as from January 2010.
Invitation to attend celebrations of WTD at L. E. Fabien Teachers Centre
All GTU members are invited to attend WTD Celebrations at L. E. Fabien Teachers Centre on 3 October 2009. Those who will attend are requested to fill in the form and fax same to the GTU by Thursday 1st October at latest. They can also call GTU office to confirm.
It is also true that many members fill in and send their names, just in a bid to please GTU committee or for other obscure reasons but eventually do not turn up. GTU informs members that if they are not in a position to attend they should refrain from inserting their names on the forms. GTU will this year write to the members who have done this disservice to the union. Members should know that the union cannot spend huge sums on lunch and refreshments for those who would not turn up.

Teachers Day in Rodrigues
Teachers Day in Rodrigues will be celebrated on Saturday 10th October 2009, most probably at Community Centre Anse aux Anglais. Members of Rodrigues are fully committed and keen to participate in the union’s activities. They all genuinely deserve GTU’s appreciation. A detailed programme will follow shortly.

I would like to thank the GTU for taking all these incentives in favour of teachers. The stickers campaign has really helped us to get access to information very quickly. Thanks again GTU.

The GTU has taken laudable initiatives in the context of the Teachers’ Day. The Integrity charter is indeed a very well thought idea. This shows that the GTU is a very innovative union. Thats why it is so much respected onthe national scene.
Tribute to all teachers who are working with honesty and nobility. Curse be on those who are playing the role of ‘vautours’ , seeking the slightest chance to downgrade this noble profession. Happy Teachers Day
Congrats to the GTU for making our teachers’ day, a day to remember !!! It was nicely organised and Mr Seegum delivered an excellent speech as usual !!!
Thanks to the GTU for organising the teachers’ day in a professional manner. We are happy and united at the GTU. Unlike those fake unions who organise teachers’ day just to make a few ‘mangé boire’ ! And the rest ? They are even not invited !!!
