Teachers News Aug 2009 : Provident Fund
Many defamatory circulars are now being sent to members concerning the PSTPF. May it be known that GTU has nothing to do with the inner administration of the fund and that members are free to voice out anything they want about the fund. As true democrats, the GTU welcomes only democratic and fair confrontations and has never been party to ‘hit below the belt’ politics.
However GTU cannot remain insensible to teachers’ cry to help save the Fund from hitting the rocks. GTU fully agrees to member teachers that they must benefit from a reasonable Retiring Benefit at retirement and it seems that same cannot be guaranteed due to the high operational costs of the fund. It should also be noted that some members of the team were too close to those bent to destroy the GTU. The union reserves the right to take any stand whatsoever in the days to come so as to remain true to our mission statement: defend teachers’ rights at any cost!
Provi-News sent individually to members
Teachers have been taken by surprise upon receiving Provi News at their personal residence. It is tobe noted that this is indeed a unique feature in as much as no individual Provi News has ever been sent since the creation of the PSTPF in 1977.
It is argued in certain quarters that a wind of panic is fast blowing at the fund, following which some leaders of the Fund have allegedly hired the services of a dishonoured and rejected ex-tradeunionist to write highly defamatory circulars on GTU and GHTU leaders. GTU is following the events closely and will not hesitate a second to denounce those behind this machiavelic move.

The GTU should defend teachers’ rights at any cost. That’s the right spirit ! And teachers would support the GTU in its task as the GTU incarnates the truth and voice of teachers.
It is really a shame that some people invaded some of our schools to carry out meetings with teachers and that when the same teachers should have been with their pupils. Who gave them the permission ? What actions have been taken against them ? Thats why parents do not send thier children at school. As they do not trust the Ministry. Ene coté pé cause ene tas, l’autre pé done permission pas coné ki Fund faire campagne et kite nou zenfant tou seul. Normal Mr Taher bizin conseille so niece pas alle l’école.
I was really shocked to hear someone relating what happened in some schools although that we are in a critical situation. How can we have meetings while teachers should take care of pupils ? And was it a union ? I hear it a provident fund. Are they allowed to do it ? Who are those HT who gave permission ? Are parents aware ? It is a real shame for those who dared to put our pupils’ lives at stake.
Li bien grave what they did.
Mr Deerpalsing, ex-minister, intervened on Radio Plus on the 25 August on Le Grand Journal to simply say that the authorities should have suspended the HT and all those involved in the shameful acts relating a provident fund. Hope that this message did reach the ears of those concerned and necesaary actions would be taken. The GTU should keep members informed as it is really an unacceptable act against our children.
I would like to see GTU DEFENDING ITS MEMBERS IN THE PSTPF because as a union you
must defend the interest of your members anywhere, anytime. There is so much abuse in
the PSTPF.I think that you must open your WEBSITE to all members of the PSTPF to
raise their voice.Just open a column and invite members to send their comments and
as a responsible union you will be surprised to see comments from members. How is it
possible for members in another provident fund of the secondary sector benefit Rs
147,000 after 25 years membership and we obtain only Rs 52,000 after 25 years
membership. Thank you
